Boba Wrap Tips & Tricks

Boba Wrap Tips & Tricks

There is a good reason why, for many parents, the Boba wrap is the fist carrier they use. It’s a one-size-fits-all carrier that is easy to use and will provide comfortable adjustable support for both parents and babies from birth on!

Most babies just adore the security and safety of the wrap as the closeness and snug fit of the layers of fabric mimic the close conditions of the womb. The gentle all-round pressure, physical contact, the sound of their parent’s heartbeat and voice is not only beneficial but even necessary for babies’ healthy development.

Our Boba wrap is a stretchy elastic wrap made of soft cotton knit fabric and a touch of spandex, with a unique four-way stretch which ensures a great fit every time!

It has moisture-wicking loops on one side, and our Serenity wraps even have bamboo viscose blended in with the cotton, which adds to the softness, so they’re perfect for use with premature babies and small infants!

They are suitable from birth and certified for use up to 35 lbs (18 kilos), but most parents will find their Boba wraps to be great for everyday use and long walks up to around six-nine months when they usually move on to a soft structured carrier like a Boba 4Gs or Boba X.

Tips

1. NAILING THE TIE EVERY TIME

The key to success is getting the tension right before you put the baby in! Tying the wrap nice and snug will ensure your baby doesn’t slip, sag or slump in the carrier and that wearing your baby feels like wearing a hug - comfortable, secure and safe!

When tying your Boba Wrap, aim to tie so it feels as tight and clings to your body like an athletic top. There is no need to tie the wrap loosely or leave space for the baby as the elasticity of the wrap will provide a snug fit!

2. PUTTING YOUR BABY IN

  • When the wrap is tied for a perfect fit, take your baby in your arms and position them on your chest in the secure ergonomic position.
  • Put baby's legs into each cross pass of the wrap and ensure the wrap is spread equally from knee pit to knee pit. Pull up the third pass (the part with the label) over your baby’s back.
  • Each pass of the wrap should come up to the baby’s neck.
  • The even weight distribution will prevent your baby from slumping sideways or their legs to drop down.
  • The baby’s chest should be snug against yours to keep the chest cavity uncurled and the chin off the chest.
  • Your baby should feel secure even if you were to lean forward (with one hand on the baby's head).

3. BABY IS TOO HIGH UP OR THE WRAP FEELS TOO TIGHT

If the wrap feels too tight or baby is too high up on your chest try the following before retying:

  • Walk around a bit - our Boba Wrap is stretchy and has a lot of give. Your baby will naturally settle down a little lower.
  • You can also lower your baby a bit by putting your hands inside the carrier under her bum, stretching the wrap out a bit and scoot her down a little.

4. BABY FEELS TOO LOW OR TOO LOOSE

  • Make sure your Boba Wrap is snug. When tying, take time to make sure all the passes of the wrap are tight and there is no excess slack before putting the baby in.
  • If you feel the baby sagging in the carrier, you may need to take her out and tighten the wrap.
  • In general, it’s better to tighten more and you can still let the wrap out a bit without having to retie completely.

Tricks

1. MAKE IT A PART OF YOUR OUTFIT

You can pre-tie your wrap before putting your baby in! This means you can put it on with the rest of your outfit in the morning and it can stay on all day so you can tuck your baby in easily when needed, and simply take them out just as quickly.

If you want to make sure your baby takes that much-needed nap or you’re out and about running errands, breastfeeding in the wrap is easy and comfortable!

Note that breastfeeding will not be completely hands-free, so make sure you support your baby’s head throughout the feed and return your baby to the safe and snug upright position after the feed.

When the seasons change, you can also slip on our Boba Hoodie over the wrap and make great use of the super practical breastfeeding access on the sides.

3. TINY/SLEEPING BABY HEAD SUPPORT

Always make sure your baby’s face is unobstructed by any kind of fabric and that their nose and mouth are at least parallel with the floor or pointing up. Fold or flip the shoulder pass for airflow and visibility, and use the other side as head support if the baby tolerates it while awake.

You can also use a rolled-up muslin cloth folded into the top section of the wrap to provide some extra neck support.

4. BIG BABIES NEED CUDDLES TOO!

The Boba wrap is also extremely useful for cuddling bigger babies or even toddlers on days when they might need extra love and comfort as the gentle all-round pressure helps reduce excessive stimuli and allows a baby to rest more peacefully.

5. AS SIMPLE AS A PELVIC TUCK

Babies’ bodies are adapted to being carried

Small infants have gently curved spines and their natural ergonomic position is with their knees drawn up into a comfortable “M shape”/frog position/spread squat.

From this wide seat base, babies can be properly supported all the way up to the back of the neck and their weight is equally distributed thus preventing the babies from slumping in the carrier (or if they are being carried in arms).

The pelvic tuck is a technique we can use to help position our babies in the optimal ergonomic position in the carrier!

When you have put your baby in the wrap, grab your baby’s calves under their knees and gently pull them up and rotating their pelvis towards you so their bum settles low in the carrier seat, the knees up so they are in the same level or higher than the baby’s hips and they are supported by the carrier seat from knee to knee. This helps create a “J shape” (from the side) or an “M shape” (from the front) position!

This M-position positioning also helps encourage healthy hip development and helps prevent hip dysplasia!
